CURRICULUM Te Hihi School offers the full range of the New Zealand Curriculum. Within our classroom programmes, priority is given to literacy and numeracy.
For 2010, the school will be involved in the following programmes: - Extending our Assessment for Learning programme into writing and other curriculum areas. This project enables us to better meet the needs of your child and report to you where your child is achieving.
- Papakura Achievement Initiative focusing on reading to complement the Assessment for Learning programme the teachers have been involved in over the past two years.
- Oral Language Enhancement Programme
- Beginning Teacher Learning & Professional Development Programme pilot run by the University of Auckland in association with the Teachers' Council and Ministry of Education.
At Te Hihi we're proud to offer Japanese to students in Years 7-8. The children thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to learn a second language and head off to secondary school with some knowledge of learning a second language.
In line with the government's active children initiative, Te Hihi School runs a full physical activity progarmme. We are very fortunate to have a 25 metre swimming pool and in February and March each class has daily swimming instruction for 30 minutes. Throughout the year, children in Years 4-8 compete in Sport Days with other schools from the Papakura District. Although we are a smaller school, our teams compete very well. This year, students in Years 1-3 will be introduced to two new sports. In Term 3 we hold our cross-country and we are very fortunate to have the use of our neighbouring farm for this event. This enables our children to train to a high standard and more often than not, our students compete very well at district and zone events. The first part of the fourth term is dedicated to athletics before we head back into the pool to do the Swim Safe programme to prepare our children for the up-coming summer holidays.
Within the Arts, Te Hihi offers children a wide range of opportunities from visual art programmes within their classroom programme to the opportunity, where possible, to be involved in our choir, kapa haka, and syndicate drama productions.
