Dear Parents  & Whanau,

Welcome back everyone! It’s great to be in Room 2 with a brand new class. We had a fantastic start with the children eager to contribute and excited about their learning. What a great bunch of children!!! We have a busy term planned with lots of exciting learning opportunities.

Maths

Cross Grouping: We are cross grouping in the Year 4-6 area again this year. Cross  class or flexible grouping is used to maximise opportunities to tailor teaching and learning to students’ performance levels.

Literacy

Our Reading programme looks at the comprehension strategies of re-telling, predict/re-predict and paraphrasing. In Written Language, we are concentrating on writing biographies.

Topic Studies

Beach Education: The Beach Education programme is run in conjunction with Surf Saving New Zealand. It provides students with opportunities to develop personal skills, and to become active, safe and skilled in the beach environment.

Science

We will be making  ginger beer and looking at the role of microbes (yeast) and sterilisation within this process.

Sport & Physical Education

Fulton Swim School is here again this year giving your children an opportunity to develop their swimming skills with experienced instructors in our own school pool. The latter part of the term focuses on Cricket, Touch Rugby and Softball in the lead up to our Summer Sports Day.

Parent Help

We will be asking for parent help at times during the term. Specifically for our Beach Education trip, Group Swimming and Summer Sports days.(See dates below). It would also be great to have some help on bottling day for our science unit. (Date to be advised)

Remember

Togs and towel need to be brought to school everyday.

Hats are compulsory outside during the summer term.

10 February 2010

 Dear Parents and Families

I would like to extend to you and your child my warmest welcome into our classroom.  My name is Mrs Managh and I will be your child’s teacher for the year.  I am really looking forward to working with your child as we have an exciting and interesting programme planned.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Listed below are some programme outlines for the term.

 Homework

Children will get their spelling lists and topic homework on Friday.  This will go home each Friday night and children will have the opportunity to start their homework in the weekend as I know how busy the week nights can be for some children.  All homework will be required to be handed in on Thursday for marking.  Spelling testing will be completed on Thursday and tables testing will be completed on Friday.

 Topic

We will be studying the following topics for the term.  If you have any resources or ideas for our topic studies we would love your input.

Weeks 1 & 2              Spotlight on You

Weeks 3 – 6              Beach Education (Trip to Kariotahi Beach)

Weeks 7 – 9              Science Unit – Making Ginger Beer

Swimming

Swimming lessons will be held in the pool during February.    Fulton Swim School will be taking lessons during the day on Mon, Wed and Fri and we will be running our own class swimming programme on Tue and Thurs.   Please ensure that your child has their towel and swimming togs in a bag every day.  All children will be expected to participate in swimming lessons unless they have a note from their parent.

 Summer sports

We will be starting summer sports programme in week 4.  Please ensure your child has sports gear on this day.

 Art

We will be doing a variety of art projects throughout the year.  Could you please send an old shirt to school for your child to wear to protect their school uniform.

  Art supplies

If you have any unwanted magazines and cardboard at home could you please send to school to build up our supplies.

Kind regards

 Kathy Managh
