Reading Programmes

As we start a new year it is worth mentioning that for many children, especially from year 3 - 4, they will be experiencing a difference in their reading programme at school.

Once students reach a certain point in the reading, they transition from learning to read to reading to learn. There are a number of factors that teachers use to assess where students are in their reading. Reading and decoding a text are the first indicators. However, comprehension, both easily observable and inferred, making predictions, summarising, responding to text also play a significant part when teachers assess whether or not a student is ready to move on.

Theferore, it is perfectly normal practice for your child to bring the same reader home for a couple of days or maybe even a week. Please note that we only send readers home in book bags. If your child doesn't have a book bag, you will need to purchase one.

We strongly encourage parents to enhance the reading experience for their child through allowing them to read other stories at home, read books they choose for enjoyment from the library or home. Children also get a lot out of being read to, so read chapter books to them or alongside them.

Often after the summer break, we see the Summer Slump. If we stop exercising for six weeks our level of fitness drops. The same can be said about reading, especially in younger students. Do not be alarmed though as your child will pick this up and if your child's teachers have any concerns they will get in touch.

More importantly if you have any concerns about your child's reading please get in touch with their teachers as they will be able to give you the accurate information you require.

Blake

In Blake this week we have been learning to wash our hands.

Some germs are sticky

and it can be tricky

to clean them off our hands.

We rinse and add soap

we rub and we scrub

to clean them off our hands.

We used a clip on you-tube to help us:
